As a result of transparency, elements of the paintings’ progress are retained revealing the marks of my struggle to create the whole. In this sense they are direct and honest despite being open to interpretation. As you walk past these paintings their colour and mood changes. This is a result of the complex geometry of layered pigment and oil diffusing and releasing light differently in different directions. Observe the flow and stop when it crystalizes. Let the painting reveal itself as if caught in formation. Abandon yourself to its fuzzy logic. Their poetry is in the colour, not the failure of reason.
The unstable space created in some of these works is not a direct optical processing conundrum as in op art, but comes from a deeper psychological prevarication, namely our inclination to interpret visual information in terms of landscape and figure which is powerfully encoded in our psyche. But these playful works are mostly based on abstract forms unrelated to landscape.
